Replacing a Bulb

*EASY*

If a bulb is burned out and must be replaced, be sure to consult your owner's manual for the appropriate replacement part and procedure. This is necessary since the style of bulbs and the methods to access the bulb sockets varies greatly.

Bayonet style bulbs (with prongs and no threads) are typical in many applications.

Bayonet style bulbs are usually replaced as follows:

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground with the engine OFF, the parking brake engaged, and the transmission in PARK (for automatic) or REVERSE (for manual).
  2. Access the defective bulb from the front or rear based upon instructions from your owner's manual. This may require removal of a lens cover or bulb socket. Make sure the bulb's light switch is OFF prior to commencing work.
  3. Loosen the bulb by pushing down on it lightly and turning it counterclockwise, typically 1/4 turn.
  4. Remove the bulb by pulling it out of the socket. If the glass is broken, remove the bulb with needle nose pliers.
  5. Insert the new bulb by aligning the prong(s) in the bulb base with the groove(s) in the bulb socket. Push firmly and turn the bulb clockwise until it stops, once again, usually 1/4 turn. If the bulb base cannot be inserted into the socket, turn the bulb around 180° and reinsert it.
  6. If the new bulb does not light after being turned ON, wiggle the bulb in the socket. If it lights, the socket is corroded and must be cleaned.

When replacing any bulb, always use a bulb with the correct power rating (wattage). If the new bulb has a power rating that is too high, it will glow dimly. If it has a power rating that is too low, it will burn out.

There are numerous miscellaneous bulbs used throughout most cars. These include visor mirror, glove compartment, interior dome light and map light. Since the design of these lighting systems varies greatly, consult your owner's manual for exact bulb replacement procedures.
